Welcome to my Blog

I chose the title of this blog to go with a Beatles song from 1969. The title made sense in October of 2009 because fighting cancer might be a drawn out challenge. I take inspiration where I can, and hope to motivate with my musings about music, my status and anything else related to life. Anyone can post comments; no sign in or account is needed, just click on the comments section towards the bottom of the post and write me a note. A splendid time is guaranteed for all. Live Happy- Greg

Helter Skelter

Like Paul McCartney in 1967, I have been a bit helter skelter lately. No one seems to know where the term helter skelter came from, but almost everyone agrees what it means.  As an adjective it means: Haphazard; carelessly hurried; confused. As an adverb it means:  in disorderly haste; pell-mell. Paul had read a story where Pete Townsend had described the latest Who song I Can See for Miles as their loudest, rawest, and dirtiest.  Paul not to be outdone composed Helter Skelter. It would have been OK, but after it was released in 1968 Charles Manson made the song infamous as he and his army of crazed murderers used the same term to describe what Manson saw as the impending racial war that he was trying to start. Someone from the Manson family painted Healter (sp) Skelter in blood on a refrigerator at the LaBianca murder scene and the rest is history.

About a month ago I told a few of my co-workers that I was retiring, and moving to a life of leisure (that was a stretch!)  Then I discovered the pain of losing insurance, money, and what looked like it might be a difficult time going through a social security disability journey.   It probably doesn't surprise many to know I was wrong on many fronts.   So here I go again-   I will be giving my termination notice to the powers that be tomorrow morning. I plan on leaving service June 30, and my official retirement date will be July 1, 2011.  Easy come- easy go. It will be nice to be away from work and the cause of a lot of stress to us. I am still doing well and in the middle of a chemo run ending tomorrow. I might have to do one more chemo three day, we will see in a few weeks.
Sadie update: We finally got a blood report showing Sadie had a thyroid problem. We are treating Sadie with some thyroid medicine, her hair is starting to grow back at least.

OMG Greggers! I swear sometimes we seem to be on the same "wavelength" or something! I've been thinking about Helter Skelter lately and all the meanings connected to the phrase... I really HATE that the phrase will forever be tied to Charles Manson rather than to the music...
Am sad that you'll be leaving KC Sheriff's Ofc., BUT!!! Although I know they are loosing one of their very BEST, I also completely understand your decision (having made a similar one 5 years ago!). It IS a bit interesting "out here" regarding the medical coverage issue, but am sure that you will figure it all out and be fine! The stress relief brought on by being "retired" is a reward far greater than all the other considerations! Congrats! I might even try to get over there for your retirement party! I KNOW that you will keep on keepin' on, living a happy life! Hugs! KKW

Karen and Cathy- Being out there among real people will be nice. Insurance will work out, I have the first year covered anyway. I am really looking forward to being away from the politics.

Yay! Retirement sounds like a great idea. As we all know life is too short to spend it stressed out and unhappy and making us ill. It sounds like a good decision. Your bro talks about it all the time.
Hang in there. God will provide.
love and prayers,
Mary D.

Continued prayers, glad you finally found out something about Sadie. Golden Retrievers and the Labs seem prone to thyroid issues, we have had Sunni checked also. I had to retire early and was not informed by the retirement people that my Cobra would expire at 65, which was a shock as I would have just as soon continued paying the cobra as Meda-junk. so goes the war.
Lord Bless and Keep You and Yours

Wow! Good for you. I can attest that the stress goes down significantly, the poitical battles go away and life is good. You deserve it brother.... you served the KCSO with dignity and I can tell you that you made life easier for me in the city and we had some good times.... come on down, it is warm and we can tell war stories and we have some good ones. Let us know when the party is, I'll try to fly up.

Gregory,
A well deserved retirement. Blaze a path that allows you to follow your passions and truly enjoy those around you. I suspect that in a couple months you will be tanned, fit, and lean and mean! The sheriff's office will miss you. Keep on top of all the soaps, Jerry Springer, and The Price in Right in case we need updates! Tony

Thanks for all of the funny and touching comments. It will be hard to leave the people, not the job. You who continue to serve the public will do so with aplomb, I am sure.

Me, it's time to write a book!

Greg - I know the idea of retiring can be daunting, but let me tell you, the change in money seems minor when you realize how little frustration and stress you feel on a daily basis. I too miss the people at KCSO but not the work at all! I LOVE RETIREMENT and so will you, just stay focused and live happy! And come visit Hawaii - we'll do lunch! Hugs and ALOHA, Valerie
