Welcome to my Blog

I chose the title of this blog to go with a Beatles song from 1969. The title made sense in October of 2009 because fighting cancer might be a drawn out challenge. I take inspiration where I can, and hope to motivate with my musings about music, my status and anything else related to life. Anyone can post comments; no sign in or account is needed, just click on the comments section towards the bottom of the post and write me a note. A splendid time is guaranteed for all. Live Happy- Greg

"Can't Buy Me Love"

Hey All!  First I have a shameless plug...For the next several blog posts I will be adding the Big Climb information as I am hoping to encourage some extra team members to join and of course any donations we can get.   The last two years our team was a top ten fundraising team among 6000 participants and several hundred teams.   We would like to make it a top five or even the top team this year.   There is still time to join, get ready if you have never climbed 69 floors before (it's doable for just about everyone one step at a time), and raise funds.   If you sign up and are not sure whether to join as a racer or climber, I suggest racer- that way if you want a "time" you can get it, and if you want to change to being an un-timed climber you can do that at the event without any issues.   To change from climber to racer is much more difficult... So far our team captain has raised over $500 setting the early pace.   I will join as soon as I am sure my leg is OK.

Team Name is: The Long and Winding Road
Team Captain: Yvonne Dymerski
Date: Sunday March 25

Here is the link:  The Big Climb

If you want to sign up you will need to find the team by name, the password to join is dolphin8 the discount code is: 076420911189 which will save you $5 at checkout.

Now to why I chose "Can't Buy Me Love."   The Beatles had just become all the rage in Great Britain, performing all over the country and in select European locales.   Paul and company were in Paris in January of 1964, according to many published reports Paul wanted to create a bluesy song that as is very obvious- demonstrated material possessions are not as important as finding love. "Can't Buy Me Love" was the sixth Beatles single, it went to number 1 quickly and for awhile it was #1 with four other Beatles songs #2-5 at one time- no other group has ever had the top five in Billboard's top 100 at the same time.   The attached video is from the British TV show Ready Steady Go and shows John singing a lot.  On record Paul was really the only singer, John and George sang some back-up during the chorus.  The song was also featured in the movie A Hard Day's Night in two scenes.   I like the message of course, it's true in so many applications.   In my situation money can't buy me remission.  But, I am close.   If the snow hadn't cancelled radiation today, I feel like my leg would be free of tumors today. Radiation will resume Thursday I hope, the femur tumors should be gone by Friday.   I am scheduled for four days of a new chemo (Clofarabine) next week Monday-Thursday that should give me the best chance at getting to remission one more time.   By the way, give me an email or call if you'd like to visit as I will be in Federal Way at St. Francis Hospital in the Medical building each day from 8:00 to probably 1:00 or longer.    My improvement I am sure is due to prayers, motivation, support, and help from you all.   Our daughter Natalie is coming to visit for the weekend from Hawaii, so everything is set up for a great week next week.   We are attending a Big Climb team captain social on Friday, we should have more information after that as well.    Enjoy the early Beatles!

hope anyone following knew that I felt like I was dying last week. That would be the reason for the less than positive posts before today. I might live 20 more years or 20 days, but I really did feel a change beginning this week. Thanks for sticking with me and the calls from some very nice people, you know who you are!

Greg,

Rocky Raccoon stopped me in my tracks. Who knew Rocky Raccoon could do that? And You're right, that was an excellent video!

Here's my take on that funny little song:

Rocky chased after his dreams. When things didn’t work out the way he planned, he took matters into his own hands and tried to correct things. That didn’t work out for him either.

Gideon’s Bible is mentioned at the beginning of the song, and at the end of the song (Alpha & Omega??).

Rocky was trying to control his life. I know that’s what I do. The bible tells us to let go of self control and give ourselves to God. Most of us struggle a great deal with that. I know I do. It's a daily thing.

Maybe I am reading too much into ole' Rocky Raccoon but I think the Beatles, particularly Lennon, were always searching for meaning in life. I think that's found right here in Rocky Raccoon of all things.

Gideon doubted himself and felt small when he was called upon to do big things. He struggled to take on that responsibility and doubted God. Once he trusted in God, and gave his will to God, he did great things.

The song doesn't say what Rocky did with his life after losing the showdown. It does end though by saying that Gideon's bible was left for Rocky’s revival. That's a good ending :)!!

May the Lord Bless and Keep you Greg! You will continue to be in our prayers. Tell Natalie "Hi" from all of us!

Greg, you are soooo positive!! I love it. Keep that attitude and any and everything is possible. Sorry I can't climb - at 73 I don't think the old legs would go further than one or two flights. But will support in every way possible. Karen McIver (Wich)

No worries Karen, a lot of folks can't make the climb including yours truly right now. Your support is all we need. Alice, I agree. God Bless our team, and everyone supporting us. Ice go away!

Greg-great, go-get'em post! That is all we can do-- fight back harder. Keep punching back, Kung-Fu fight it. I tried to spread the word about the Big Climb and Ski to Defeat ALS via my email contacts. Just heard some great news about a scientific study that should be incentive for joining the Big Climb...if you can climb 2 flights of stairs, your heart is good enough without risk of heart attack for you to um, get some nookie!!! :-) Not sure what that means if you climb, ahem, 69 floors. :-)
Looking forward to good news after the next radiation and chemo. Hope you have electricity there and are recovering from that monster storm. And Natalie arrives safe. Enjoy your time with your girls.
Sending love and strength,
Mary D.

Natalie arrived thursday just after we lost power cable and internet. When we got home from the airport at least the power was back on. It's amazing how losing the routine television and interweb inspires great conversation! The power of prayer, support, and kindness is also amazing, I will explain more on my next post. I was able to complete my radiation friday and will be at the federal way medical office bldg 34509 9th ave south suite 301 monday through thursday and would still look forward to a visit 8-2... Go PATS!

We read in awe about those mountain lion tracks the size of your massive 14 Big A, wow. Now a picture without conflict would be real cool. If this chemo gets me healthy, a big if but I should say when- then I will climb come hell or high water. Thanks for the motivation!

Greg - you are allowed those up and down days. I am sure that you have learned that there are no rules in the cancer game, it is up to you and God to steer your course. My prayers continue to be with you and your family.

Day 1 was tough, day 2 was strange, day 3 is the best yet. I had some liver enzymes come back very abnormal so I might miss day 4 unless they correct. So far I am not feeling quick cancer termination like other chemo and radiation treatments had shown in the past. Keeping positive all the same! Thanks for the prayers and many visits this week from some great people!

Love and prayers,
