Welcome to my Blog

I chose the title of this blog to go with a Beatles song from 1969. The title made sense in October of 2009 because fighting cancer might be a drawn out challenge. I take inspiration where I can, and hope to motivate with my musings about music, my status and anything else related to life. Anyone can post comments; no sign in or account is needed, just click on the comments section towards the bottom of the post and write me a note. A splendid time is guaranteed for all. Live Happy- Greg

Prayers Needed AND ANSWERED IN ONE DAY!

Tres amigos y
Greg here, one hand typing as I continue to struggle with balance.   I DID NOT HAVE THE BIOPSY/SURGERY AFTER ALL WHEN LAB WORKERS GOT A
"HIT" CALLED RSV VIRUS JUST PRIOR TO ME GOING TO SLEEPYVILLE.   NOW WE WILL TRY SOME NEW ANTI-VIRALS FIRST AND SEE THEY WORK.
ARRGGHHH!

this is Yvonne posting for Greg. He needed a little of help due to fevers, etc.

I wanted to update everybody. Saturday at 5 am we go to ER at ST. Josephs Hospital with difficulty breathing and fevers of 101.5 . He needed to be put on oxygen because his levels were low along with tachycardia. As we were waiting for a room on the 10th floor, all of these symptoms began to improve. He had several tests performed while in ER. The thought was possible pneumonia.

The fever broke for 36 hours then starting spiking again Sunday afternoon along with increase weakness, low oxygen and tachycardia. In the morning he was able to walk around the hospital, but by the afternoon he had difficulty standing or sitting on the edge of the bed.

He still runs variable temps going on day 5. This am it was 103.1, the highest yet. He is still on oxygen, since his levels will drop without it . We are waiting for test result for another day, before it will be decided if a lung biopsy will be performed.

The good news he was able to do 5 laps around the 10th floor with oxygen and IV`s. He continues to be a fighter.

The Pulmonologist just reported his CT scan shows the lungs are getting worse and appears to be an autoimmune disorder. A lung biopsy in the next day or two and a high dose of steroids IV form. The doctor thought maybe graft vs host disease of the lungs. Wow!! As Greg says watch out world!!! ( Due to rage of steroids ha, ha!!! Help me) The IV steroids will even go higher once properly diagnosed for sure.

( Help, help!!!) Once Greg is out of the woods I think work will be good place for me.  As the title of this posting says prayers are needed this can be corrected and  figured out quickly.

Hi Yvonne, this is Robin, we have been thru similar circumstances with Ken's metatsis to the lungs and pneumonia with similar symptoms. Greg and Ken are in my prayers more than once each day. We are 31/2 weeks into this treatment plan at VM with a couple more weeks to go and dealing with some new side effects. How do our guys find such strength .....

Yvonne and Greg

I am sending you all of my love and support. I think of so many people that plop down on the couch because they are too tired to move after working 8 hours and here you are Greg doing laps despite a fever and lung complications. Once again you put us all to shame with your fierce and indomitable will.

Yvonne, as you said, "once he is out of the woods"....you have both weathered so many of these crazy hills and valleys on your trip thru medical insanity. The fact that he is motoring around says a lot about his edge and getting on top of this speedbump. I do know from our *trip* that immense amounts of strength are always there when you need them. Sending YOU *and* Greg some of my reserve power, I know it's still there!! Hugs to both of you from Chicago. Love, Sue

Thank you so much for all of the wonderful words and support. It really help with reserve strength to keep pushing forward. The nurses are laughing at our bickering about not over doing it. I am protective as Greg keeps pushing on. We came to a compromise about how many laps to do on the 10th floor.

Yvonne, great to talk to you tonight. You are as much a fighter and inspiration as Greg. All thoughts and prayers every minute of every day are for you, and Greg, and Cathy and Les. Makes any problems in my days here look silly. It was good to hear your laugh on the phone and I could see that million watt smile from here tonight.
You two keep hanging tough--lots of people are thinking of you both.
love,

It's me, Greg. I have to say first that the amount of out of town support continues to amaze me! Sue,please feel free to impart your wisdom ANYTIME! Sharon and Dan my "Rockies" cousin/wife have done much more than comment- Sharon makes artistic cards that are full of love and support. I have enjoyed every visit and am here to tell you I know we are headed in the right direction. Yes, two doses of I.V. steroid had taken my once scary average temp. of 101.5 down to 97.2 (my normal)
Steroids also ease or mask pain, and on the potential downsides mean my immunity system will be suppressed to the max. To end on a high note, my Dad, wife Alice, and cousin Dan are doing a western swing seeing Cathy first in PDX then maybe the weekend with us? I will be in the hospital at least through the weekend, visitors are ALWAYS WELCOME. LIVE HAPPY EVEN IF IT MEANS TAKING A HIT OR TWO!

The Bruins game should be a good one to watch - 7:30 our time. Lucic will probably have a little bit of an edge to him tonight :)
Think of you & Yvonne every day -

This is Yvonne for Greg again:

Greg had a tough night last night. He was put on a CPap machine to better assist his breathing. They have had a hard time keeping his oxygen levels where it belongs especially through the night. His fevers continue although this am they have improved thanks to steroids. He has a lot of inflammation in his lung. Keep up those prayers since each day has been a little worse.

Greg,
Praying & hoping things are turning in the right direction for you. I know this virus is not going to keep you down - you are too strong for that. You've fought this fight for a reason - good things are going to happen, I just know it.
Yvonne,
You are amazing and Greg is so lucky to have such a wonderful, loving, caring wife, partner, and friend beside him. Stay healthy we'd love to see you guys this summer.

Greg and Yvonne,
Been thinking about you guys all the time. Sounds like it has been rougher than "usual." Hoping things are on the upswing this morning and the breathing is better and fever is receding.
Enjoy the visits with Dad, Alice and Dan. So great of Dan to come see you guys.
Keep fighting--you both have been so amazing and tough. From your athletic endeavors you know all about digging deep. It's there. We all send more fighting resources for you, too.
love and prayers,
Mary D.

This is Yvonne again: The good news he has not had a fever today but The CPAP machine is operating at 100% but those oxygen levels are staying up in the 90`s if he stays on his back. Any movement or attempt at talking will lower the oxygen levels immediately. He did sleep better last night since this has started. The day has mini mini improvements.

Unforetunately,he is unable to eat because they are unable to take him off of CPAP for short periods of time due to oxygen levels dropping.

Yvonne, thanks for the update. We have been thinking of you all day and all night. Went to Mass last night and said a whole lot of Hail Marys. Good to hear his fever is down and he's sleeping better. I hope you are getting some rest, too.
Hoping, hoping, hoping and praying.
love to you both,
Mary D.

Sending you good thoughts your way all day today. I was listening to a song by The Band and wishing I could have you hear it too. Your posts have helped to bring music back again into my life....dated, old rock n roll but music nonetheless.
