Welcome to my Blog

I chose the title of this blog to go with a Beatles song from 1969. The title made sense in October of 2009 because fighting cancer might be a drawn out challenge. I take inspiration where I can, and hope to motivate with my musings about music, my status and anything else related to life. Anyone can post comments; no sign in or account is needed, just click on the comments section towards the bottom of the post and write me a note. A splendid time is guaranteed for all. Live Happy- Greg

Fun with covers

Most people know the song "Yesterday" by the Beatles. Folks might not know that it has been recorded and covered by other artists at least 3000 times. There are many Beatles songs that have been covered over the years. Contemporary popular rock and roll artists to ukulele virtuosos have taken turns adapting or offering their take on classic and obscure Beatles tunes. I'd like to highlight a few of my favorites as I go onto Chemo session number 5, thanks to my Hawaiian brother Malcolm for the first artist who embodies the spirit and lends his own flavor to an original Beatles song. Jake Shimabukuro is worth a listen, and he is performing in concert in the Northwest in March (Portland, Bremerton and Edmonds. Go to his website for details.)

Among my favorite Beatle's covers are the ones done by Kenny Rankin. He is blessed with a natural singing talent that he has maintained through many years. We have seen him perform live songs like 'Penny Lane' and 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps'. He is worth a listen.
Greg, we hope your next chemo session goes smoothly and you are home soon.

Greg, Jake is amazing. He works that uke for all its worth. Very impressive. I checked his website and I see he mostly plays west coast gigs. Have you seen his show?
Hope you are ok and staying strong.

Jake's show will be something to look forward to. Rosalie and I have tickets to see Phil Lesh and Bob Weir a.k.a. Furthur in February this year. Hopefully all will go well with no blizzards and we'll get there. It's always interesting to see performers live and compare them to their recordings. Of course with Jake's UTube stuff you can almost guarantee what you'll see. He got the talent.

Did I hear Greg admit he is a dead head?!!! Whoa. I thought it was just your goofy brother. And cuz John, too?!! Szark--you rock. Alan will be jealous about Further.
Loved the uke video. Wow.
Here's a funny story. Remember the "Message in a Bottle" thing I brought to Canon Beach..and had everyone sign their names? After everyone left on Mon., Alan and I were still there and he tried to throw the bottle out in the outgoing tide. The damn thing came back twice. I take that as a good omen that none of us is going on any long journeys any time soon. The bottle came back home with us. Will have to find somewhere else to throw it out.
It is 10 below zero here.
Hope you are feeling good and strong. Listen to some hippie music!

The chemo is going good so far, had my spinal infusion this morning after four attempts they got the five inch needle in. (no shooting pains at least.) Had a nice visit from Jim and Jan and Yvonne. Yvonne might go see the 75th birthday party for Elvis tomorrow with some friends as the Kentucky Rain moves back into Washington. Greg
